About CarChecker
What CarChecker Does
CarChecker helps UK used car buyers spot warning signs in listings before they waste time or money on a bad purchase. You paste a car advert from AutoTrader, Facebook Marketplace, Gumtree, or anywhere else, and CarChecker analyses the text for red flag language, suspicious phrases, and missing information.
The tool also checks against a knowledge base of known model-specific faults. If you mention the make and model, CarChecker surfaces common problems that owners and mechanics report for that vehicle. On top of that, it generates a list of targeted seller questions and a physical inspection checklist so you arrive at any viewing fully prepared.
Everything runs instantly in your browser. There is no account to create, no data stored, and no payment required.
What the Score Means
CarChecker produces a risk score between 0 and 100. A higher score means fewer warning signs were found — it is not a guarantee the car is fault-free.
- 85–100 (Low risk) — Few or no red flags detected. The advert reads as straightforward. Still inspect the car in person.
- 65–84 (Moderate risk) — Some caution is warranted. One or more yellow flags were found. Ask the seller about them directly.
- 40–64 (High risk) — Multiple warning signs detected. Approach with significant caution. Consider whether it is worth viewing at all.
- 0–39 (Very high risk) — Serious red flags present. The advert contains language strongly associated with problem cars or scams.
What CarChecker Is Not
CarChecker is not an HPI check. It does not connect to the DVLA, DVSA, insurance databases, or any government register. It cannot tell you whether a car has been stolen, is subject to outstanding finance, or has a hidden write-off history.
For a full history check, use a dedicated service such as HPI Check, Experian AutoCheck, or the free DVLA MOT history checker. CarChecker is a complement to these services, not a replacement.
CarChecker also does not replace a physical inspection by a qualified mechanic. A pre-purchase inspection from an AA or RAC-approved garage is the single most effective way to uncover hidden mechanical faults.
Disclaimer
Use CarChecker as a starting point, not a final decision. Always inspect any car in person before buying, and consider an independent pre-purchase inspection for cars over £5,000. Results are guidance only and reflect only the information provided to the tool.
